A William IV Old Sheffield Plate Entree dish and warmer stand by Henry Wilkinson & Co., Sheffield - 1836-1840
An Old Sheffield Plate silver entree dish and warming stand of the William IV period by Henry Wilkinson & Co., of Norfolk Street, Sheffield - dated c. 1836-1840. Raised on four heavily cast raised feet, the intricate conforming handles with foilate detail. Oblong shaped body, the lid with a moulded border and centred detachable handle, allowing the lid to be turned upside down and placed on the table as an additional dish.
In excellent condition. This is a fine piece of silverware dating from the waning days of a pre-industrial production method that saw itself replaced by electrolitical silver-plating, which created objects of seemingly similair splendour, albeitt with but a fraction of the silver content.
Marked on the bottom with [Crossed keys in shield] for Henry Wilkinson & Co., and [I.E.] - likely the initials of the artisan. Marks validated from an excerpt of the 19th century Sheffield maker's mark register -
