At the turn of the 20th century, the German WMF (Württembergische Metallwarenfabrik) - with its factory in Geislingen an der Steige - had acquired a worldwide leading position as a producer of household metal products. With designer Albert Mayer at the helm as director and head of the WMF Art Studio, the company made a name for itself manufacturing items in Jugendstil. When this style gradually fell out of favor after the First World War, the company was quick to pick up on the new influences, maintaining a leading position in silverware in Germany well into the 1960s.
