Christofle & Cie - Antique silver plated Oil & Vinegar set - Cruet Set - Paris, 1868
An antique oil and vinegar set, manufactured in 1868 by Christofle et. Cie/Charles Christofle of Paris. A remarkable detail - which underlines the age of the piece - is that brass was still used as the base metal for the production, whereas Christofle was one of the first silversmiths to switch to full production in white base metal (Alfenide/Mallechort) in the third quarter of the 19th century.
The glass decanters and salt shakers hang in a platform with silver-plated rings. This platform can be rotated, so that every table guest can easily make a desired choice.
Considering her more than 150 years of age, this set is still in very good condition.
The initials C.M. as engraved into the base. Around these engravings, as well as on the inside of the rings, the silver layer is somewhat worn here and there. However, this is hardly noticeable from the outside, and also gives the piece a certain charm.
Height of set: 27cm
Height decanters: 15cm
Diameter salt shakers: 5.5cm
Also included are 2 spoons, including one in .925 or .950 silver. Possibly Emile Puiforcat, although the maker's mark is so small that it is difficult to verify.
Marked on the base with [15][C-Scales-C in oval within square][Christofle in rectangle with rounded corners]. These maker's marks were in use between 1862-1873, but the stamp [Christofle] of this size was only in use in 1868.
