A WMF Late Art Nouveau/Early Art Deco silver plated 5-piece Tea- and Coffee service - Württenbergische Metallwarenfabrik, Geislingen - c. 1920
This silver-plated tea and coffee service is a beautiful and rare example of the transition phase from Art Nouveau to Art Deco, which began around 1920. The graceful lines of the "new style" can still be seen in this tea set, but the simplicity of the decorations already indicate a departure from purely naturalistic influences, and an entry of geometry into the designer's work. The tea set is decorated with beaded edges in a vertical direction, which resemble stitchings, and bands with square decorations.
Consisting of;
- Teapot
- Coffee pot
- Lidded Sugar bowl
- Creamer
- Tray
The whole is in perfect condition, almost like new, and without damage. Rare collector's item.
The jugs and the tray marked with [Ostrich- G in square under arc][I/O][OX] for Württembergische Metallwarenfabrik, Geislingen. This mark was in use from 1910 to about 1925.
At the turn of the 20th century, the German WMF (Württembergische Metallwarenfabrik) - with its factory in Geislingen an der Steige - had acquired a leading position worldwide as a producer of household metalware. With designer Albert Mayer at the helm as director and head of the WMF Art Studio, the company made a name for itself with the manufacture of Art Nouveau items. When this style slowly but surely made way for Art Deco after the First World War, the company was quick to pick up on the new influences.
