Gero, Zeist - Silver Plated Art Deco Cutlery Canteen - design Jan Eisenloeffel - 73-piece/10-pax. - the Netherlands, 1929-1953
This wooden canteen contains a large silver-plated set of cutlery in the 70 (0) pattern, which was designed in 1929 by the industrial designer Jan Eisenloeffel for Gero,Zeist. It can be rightly stated that this pattern was one of Gero's most iconic models. It remained popular long after the Art Deco style declined, and was sold until 1953.
The cutlery model 70(0) is a striking sight. In fact, it is a mix of 18th century elegance (the "wobble tail" on the underside of the stems is an ancient detail) and early 20th century modern design, with round, geometric details and straight, clean lines. Eisenloeffel knew like no other how to combine the past with the present, and thus managed to break new ground in terms of design without completely letting go of the past.
