At the turn of the 20th century, the German WMF (Württembergische Metallwarenfabrik) - with its factory in Geislingen an der Steige - had acquired a leading position worldwide as a manufacturer of household metal goods. With designer Albert Mayer at the helm as director and head of the WMF Art Studio, the company made a name for itself with the manufacture of Art Nouveau items. When, after the First World War, this style slowly but surely made way for Art Deco, the company was quick to pick up the new influences.
